Being a part of Majatalo's family for two months

Majatalon vieraskirjassa oli hiljattain uusi tervehdys: 
"We have enjoyed being a part of your family for a few days".

Tässä kiteytyi mielestäni jotain oleellista Hetan Majatalosta. Talossa asutaan ja elellään normaalia arkista elämää. Samalla ollaan kaikki läsnä vieraita varten. 

Toisinaan brittivieraat ovat lähdössä muhkeissa talvitamineissaan iltaretkelle jäälle ja samaan aikaan Tiinan eno astelee lungisti kylpytakissaan -25 asteen pakkasessa saunaan. Itseäni hymyilyttävät aina nämä meidän tuikitavalliset ja samalla vieraille niin ihmeelliset kohtaamiset.

Talo on joka puolella täynnä muistoja, tarinoita, hetkiä ja kohtaamisia vuosikymmenten ajalta. Vieraat illallistavat Majatalon 2. polven emännän Maijan vanhan puurokauhan vieressä, pelaavat korttia Majatalon 4. polven vetäjän Tiinan ylioppilaskuvan alla ja valokuvaavat poronsarvia, joita perhe on ripustanut vajan seinälle.

Tulin Hetan Majataloon talvikaudeksi 2025-26 auttamaan siellä missä apua tarvitaan. Tarkoituksenani oli tehdä hetki ihan jotain muuta kuin toimistotöitä. Toiveenani oli löytää paikka, jossa olisi yksinkertaisesti hyvä olla töissä. Unelmani oli myös kokea arkea ja ulkoiluelämää pohjoisessa. Löysin kaikki kolme, ja se on tuonut talveeni suunnatonta iloa.

Hetta on niin rauhallinen, avara ja lempeä. Ympärillä on parin askeleen päässä suuri erämaa, talvinen metsä, Ounasjärven jäät ja tähtitaivas. Jyppyrävaaralle voi nousta vaikka aamuin illoin ja laduilla saa sauvoa kilometreittäin kaikessa rauhassa. 

Kohtaamiset ihmisten kanssa siellä täällä tekivät olon kotoisaksi. Ei oikeastaan ollut väliä kävinkö Hetan Ladun tapahtumassa, kylän ainoassa ruokakaupassa, paikallisessa apteekissa, hopeasepän luona, vaatekaupassa, Tunturi-Lapin luontokeskuksessa vai Enontekiön seurakunnan itsenäisyyspäivän juhlassa, aina otettiin hyvin vastaan.

On ollut etuoikeus saada elää Enontekiön talvea hetken verran osana Vuontisjärven perhettä, yhdessä Majatalon ihanien kollegojen ja hurmaavien brittien kanssa. (Hotellin sometileiltä voi kurkistaa kuvia kaikista meistä joulukauden ahertajista.)

Hetan Majatalo has a guest book, which recently had this new greeting: 
"We have enjoyed being a part of your family for a few days". 

To me, this summed up something essential about Hetan Majatalo. We live a normal everyday life in the house. At the same time, we are all present for our guests. Sometimes the British guests are leaving for an evening trip to the frozen Ounasjärvi lake in their plush winter clothes, and at the same time Tiina's uncle walks calmly in his bathrobe to the sauna in -25c degrees. These encounters, which are so ordinary for us and yet so especial for our guests, always make me smile. 

Hetan Majatalo is full of memories, stories, moments and encounters from past decades. Guests dine next to Maija's (the hostess from the second generation) old porridge scoop, play cards under Tiina's (the manager in the fourth generation) high school graduation photo, and take photos of the old reindeer antlers that the family has hung on the wall of the shed.

I came to Hetan Majatalo for the winter season 2025-26 to help where help is needed. My intention was to do something completely different than office work for a while. My wish was to find a place where it would simply be good to work at. My dream was also to experience everyday life and outdoor life in the north of Finland. I found all three of my wishes, and it has brought immense joy to my winter. 

Hetta is so peaceful, spacious and gentle. A few steps away from the hotel opens up a large wilderness, a winter forest, the Ounasjärvi lake and all the bright stars in the sky. You can climb up to Jyppyrä fell all the mornings and evenings if you'd like, and you can go cross-country skiing for kilometers in complete peacefulness.

Meeting people here and there made me feel at home. It didn't really matter whether I went to an event at Hetan Latu Outdoor Organization, the only grocery store in the village, the local pharmacy, the silversmith's, a clothing store, the Fell Lapland Nature Center or the Enontekiö parish's Independence Day celebration, I was always well received. 

It has been a privilege to experience the Enontekiö winter for a while as part of the Vuontisjärvi family, together with the hotel's wonderful colleagues and all of our charming British guests. Pssst. On winter evenings, we at Hetan Majatalo's lobby usually play songs from the Sámi and Lappish culture, such as the nominees and winners of the Sami Grand Prix from different years. I picked one to accompany my story: the song Vádjolus by Niko Valkeapää, musician from Enontekiö.
